Stainless steel scrap is classified by the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) using specific codes based on alloy grade, form (solids or turnings), and composition, with key grades including 304, 316, and 200 series. Common ISRI codes include 200 Series (201, 202) solids, 300 Series (304, 316) solids, and specific designations for shredded, turnings, or specialized alloy scrap.

Key ISRI Stainless Steel Scrap Classifications:

304/18-8 SERIES:

Clean stainless steel clips and solids (e.g., 18% chrome, 8% nickel).

316:

Contains higher molybdenum and nickel for corrosion resistance.

ISRI Zurik SHEDDED STEEL SCRAP:

Shredded, non-ferrous metal concentrate composed primarily of stainless steel, often with 70-76% stainless steel content, and small amounts of aluminum and copper.

ISRI Pekoe 200 SERIES STAINLESS STEEL SCRAP SOLIDS:

Shall consist of all types of clean AISI Series Stainless Steel Scrap Solids, which contain a maximum of 5% copper, free of foreign attachments and other contamination.

ISRI Sabot STAINLESS STEEL SCRAP:

Specifically mentioned for high-grade 304/316/201/430 scrap.
Shall consist of clean 18-8 type stainless steel clips and solids containing a minimum 7% nickel, 16% chrome, and have a maximum of .50% molybdenum, .50% copper, .045% phosphorous, and .03% sulfur, and otherwise free of harmful contaminants. Particulars concerning physical description, grading, additional analysis, and preparation to be agreed upon between buyer and seller.

ISRI Ultra STAINLESS STEEL TURNINGS:

Shall consist of clean 18-8 type stainless steel turnings containing a minimum 7% nickel and 16% chrome, and to be free of non-ferrous metals, nonmetallics, excessive iron, oil and other contaminants. Particulars concerning physical description, assay, and packaging to be agreed upon between buyer and seller.

Preparation: Solids are usually defined by size (40 x 30 cm) for charging.
